Since this is a very energetic dog, it constantly requires games and entertainment. Therefore, in order to keep the attention of the Scottish Retriever, training must be consistent and structured in the form of short and varied lessons, so that the lights do not have time to bore the dog. It shows itself well in hunting for game and in sports obedience. It is sometimes heard that this breed has the wonderful personality of the extremely popular Golden Retriever, but the Nova Scotia Duck Retriever is much more wary of strangers or animals.
